Elephanta Caves Tour in Mumbai

This guided tour explores the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island, suited for history and archaeology enthusiasts visiting Mumbai.

Description

Elephanta Caves are stone-cut cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, situated on Elephanta Island (Gharapuri) in Mumbai Harbor, about 10 kilometers east of Mumbai city in Maharashtra. The island features five Hindu caves and two Buddhist caves with water tanks, along with archaeological remains dating from the 2nd century BCE onward.

The caves were constructed between the mid-5th and 6th centuries AD. The largest, Cave 1, measures approximately 39 meters in length and 27 meters square internally, supported by two rows of six pillars each. Its layout closely resembles the Dumar Lena cave at Ellora. The site also includes stupas on the eastern hillock and remnants from the Portuguese period.

Preservation efforts have maintained the site's integrity since its inscription as a World Heritage Site, involving repairs to pillars, facades, stairways, and the Custodian’s Quarters, as well as the establishment of an Information Center. Continued conservation is essential to address salt damage, stone surface deterioration, and potential impacts from nearby urban development.
