Vihar Lake

Vihar Lake is situated closer to the Vihar village on the Mithi River along the way to the Borivali National Park, also called the Sanjay Gandhi National Park; in North Mumbai .This lake was built in 1860 and was the largest lake in Mumbai in the Salsette group of islands.
It lies between the Tulsi Lake and the Powai Lake. It meets the basic drinking water needs of the Southern Mumbai region. It supplies water to Mumbai after filtration at Bhandup, where a large water filtration plant is located.
It’s lying between beautiful hills, floras and faunas. You can enjoy seeing beautiful migratory as well as native birds in the scenic surroundings of the lake. This place offers you a sunset point and the combination of hilly terrain and the greenery of the National park make this area beautiful.
It must be noted though that the Vihar Lake is not open for the general public. Yet if you are interested to visit this lake, then you should seek prior permission from the park's authorities.
The lake, incidentally, is infested with crocodiles, which often bask in the sun. This being the largest lake of Mumbai, you can reach this lake driving 27 miles from the city centre. Rainwater of the lake gathers from the catchment area of the Powai-Kanheri Hill Ranges. This lake is the main source of water for the city.
Location- Sanjay Gandhi Park. You can easily reach Vihar Lake by boarding buses or trains, or by hiring autos or taxis from the city.
