The Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and tomb in the Mahim Bay of Mumbai that can be reached by a narrow causeway. It is located on a small island off the shoreline of Worli. It was built in 1431 by a rich Muslim merchant and saint Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who gave up all his worldly his possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. The Mosque looks stunning amidst the blue waters of the sea.
As per the legends, Haji Ali left this world during his journey to Mecca and a coffer carrying his body hovered back to Mumbai. The mosque stands at present in the memory of the great saint Haji Ali. The edifice of the mosque is a brilliant specimen of the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. The Dargah has a tomb that is always covered with a brocaded red and green sheet, supported by a delicate silver frame. The marble pillars inside the main hall are decorated with multihued mirrors and embrace the ninety-nine names of Allah. On Thursdays and Fridays, the shrine is visited by at least 40,000 pilgrims. Various Sufi musicians perform a form of devotional music called Qawwali at the Dargah. Irrespective of faith and religion, people visit this mosque to get the blessings of the legendary saint.
