Directions to Mahalakshmi Temple
Mahalakshmi temple is one of the most sacred temples located in Mumbai. It was built in 1785 at the seashore on the northern side of the Malabar hills. The waves of the Arabian Sea impart a perfect background to this religious shrine of Mahalakshmi. It is renowned for its exclusive history and devoutness. The temple enshrines and contains images of three deities- Goddess Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati. All three images of Goddesses are adorned with nose rings, gold bangles and pearl necklaces.
The temple is particularly dedicated to Mahalakshmi, who is the Goddess of wealth as per the Hindu mythology. The history of this temple is supposedly connected with the building of the Hornby Vellard. Apparently after portions of the sea wall of the Vellard collapsed twice, the chief engineer dreamt of a Devi statue in the sea near Worli. A search recovered it, and he built a temple for it. After this, the work on the Vellard could be completed without a hitch. The main doorway of the temple is richly ornamented, leading to the temple complex. The celestial appearance of these images, enhance the spiritual aura of the temple. It is believed that the Goddess fulfills all the wishes of her true devotees. People with their firm conviction, come to the holy shrine of Mahalakshmi, to seek blessings from the Goddess.
