The temple is particularly dedicated to Mahalakshmi, who is the Goddess of wealth as per the Hindu mythology. The history of this temple is supposedly connected with the building of the Hornby Vellard. Apparently after portions of the sea wall of the Vellard collapsed twice, the chief engineer dreamt of a Devi statue in the sea near Worli. A search recovered it, and he built a temple for it. After this, the work on the Vellard could be completed without a hitch. The main doorway of the temple is richly ornamented, leading to the temple complex. The celestial appearance of these images, enhance the spiritual aura of the temple. It is believed that the Goddess fulfills all the wishes of her true devotees. People with their firm conviction, come to the holy shrine of Mahalakshmi, to seek blessings from the Goddess.
