Madh Fort is a small fort located in northern Mumbai. It is situated at Madh Island, which is secluded and difficult to reach and is about 15 km far away from Malad. It is also known as the Versorva Fort. The area is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Malad creek on the east. It was built at an extremely strategic point by the Portuguese and was meant to serve as a watchtower. The Portuguese lost it in February 1739 to the Marathas during their war with the Maratha Empire. It is a great place to catch a spectacular view of the Mumbai beach skyline, with Gorai at one end and Worli on the other.
It is a peaceful place for relaxation, which offers the visitors a sense of calmness. Aksa beach is near to this fort. Its external façade is intact but internally it is dilapidated. It is under control of the Indian Air Force and is currently being used as a training destination for military cadets. Since it is under the control of the Indian Armed Forces and the Navy, special permission is required for accessing and visiting the fort. Many Bollywood movies as well as TV serials have been shot at this location.
