Description

After being picked up from the hotel, head to the Churchgate Railway Station and see the Dabbawalas disembarking the Dabbas (tiffins) in the wooden cart from the train. At Churchgate station, watch how the people stand in the ticket counter queue and take their tickets to reach their offices. Then, walk towards the platform to board the local train for Mahalaxmi Station. Experience the ambiance of a Mumbai local train, which is the major means of transport in Mumbai. Travel in a first-class compartment and from South to North Mumbai. Arrive at the station, which is situated next to the municipal dhobi ghats at Mahalakshmi, in the suburb of Mumbai. Most of the Dabbawalas get down at Mahalaxmi Station, as all the corporate offices are in this vicinity. Here, learn how the Dabbawalas sort out the tiffin boxes based on the markings on the tiffins, which are done area-wise. Listen to a brief introduction here with the dabbawalas and their exact arrangements of how the tiffins are coded and distributed at the right place at the right time. The tiffins are put on the wooden crater, which carries 150 tiffins, and driven by 3–4 Dabbawalas in different directions for delivery on the bicycle. Proceed to the open-air laundry, known as Dhobi Ghat. Discover this unique feature of Mumbai firsthand as you view the rows upon rows of concrete wash pens, each fitted with its own flogging stone. See how the clothes are soaked in sudsy water, thrashed on the flogging stones, then tossed into huge vats of boiling starch and hung out to dry. Continue to Dharavi and follow your guide through the commercial area of the slum. Hear about how roughly 60% of the citizens of Mumbai live in slums, and Dharavi, with a population of at least half a million, has probably become the most famous one of them, especially after the success of the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.' Learn how waste recycling has become a big business in Dharavi and how the residents and workers scavenge materials from all over the city and bring them to the little workshops in order to clean, process, and recycle them. Step onto a roof right in the center of the settlement and view the vast expanse of the slum. Finally, you will be returned to your starting point.
